The Alpha Parent: Timeline of Postpartum Recovery. So you’ve just had a baby? I bet you’re raring to get back to your aerobics class and daily jogs (huh? Your body has its own timeline for recovery, and it’s important to take heed. In less than a year, you conceived, developed and delivered a beautiful, living creature. To perform this feat your body underwent some tremendous changes. Even after birth, you'll experience more. Whether you had a vaginal delivery or caesarean section, this timeline is for you. Being informed of the process of postpartum recovery will help you to appreciate the phenomenal transformation your body is undergoing. Day 1: You're already 9 to 1. The process of delivery has slowed the movement of food through the intestines, which may cause you to feel bloated or constipated. After a vaginal delivery your vagina will be stretched open and may be swollen and bruised. Vaginal bleeding as heavy as (and often heavier than) your menstrual period will occur. Today we are the market leader and one of the largest independent transporters and. When figuring out which is the right option, look for keywords that may relate the most to the question being asked. Learn this principle by answering this 55 items. This is called lochia and is a byproduct of your uterus shrinking back into your pelvis and shedding the lining and any cells that are left from the placenta. This includes all the extra tissues, blood vessels, muscles and ligaments, which grew and developed during pregnancy, dissolving through a process of self- digestion and shrinking, called autolysis and involution (Tiran 2. A sudden gush when you stand up in the first few days is normal. Because blood and the occasional clot are the predominant ingredients of lochia during these early days, your discharge can be quite red. Maternity towels, not tampons, should be used to absorb the flow. You have an open internal wound at the site where the placenta was attached to the uterine wall, and like any wound, this one is vulnerable to infection. Tampons could introduce bacteria. Your uterus is shrinking rapidly in an effort to control bleeding and return to its pre- pregnancy state. You will experience abdominal cramps (afterpains) as your uterus contracts and shrinks (from about 1kg to just 5. Breastfeeding will speed up this process, shrinking the uterus back to its normal size more quickly while pinching off exposed blood vessels at the site where the placenta separated from the uterus. During pregnancy, your internal organs gradually shift around to make room for your growing baby. Now that your baby has suddenly gone from your uterus, your organs have to make their way back to their prepregnancy position. This can make you feel like your organs are just hanging in space. This feeling will pass over the next week or so, as your abdominal muscles regain some of their tone and your organs shift back into place. Aside from the obvious lack of sleep and aftermath of gruelling labour, low potassium levels can contribute to a feeling of exhaustion. Eat plenty of potassium- rich foods, such as bananas, tomatoes, dried apricots, and plain yogurt. You are likely to experience perineal discomfort, pain, numbness, if you had a vaginal delivery (especially if you had stitches). You will experience discomfort sitting and walking if you had an episiotomy or a repair of a tear.
Walking is, however, the best activity during this immediate postnatal period, and a gentle daily walk is recommended (Coulson 2. Difficulty urinating will occur. Some women feel no urge at all; others feel the urge but are unable to satisfy it. However it is essential that you empty your bladder within six to eight hours of delivery to avoid urinary tract infection, loss of muscle tone in the bladder from over- distension, and bleeding (because an overfull bladder can get in the way of your uterus as it attempts the normal postpartum contractions that staunch bleeding). You may have haemorrhoids continued from pregnancy, or new from pushing. These are various veins in your ass that can be sore, itchy, bleed and generally make you feel your ass has turned inside out. All- over achiness especially if you did a lot of pushing. You may have swelling in your legs and feet. Reduce it by keeping your feet elevated when possible. You may have bloodshot eyes from pushing. Sweating and lots of it, particularly at night. You can shower or take a bath as usual, but always use mild, unscented soap or just water when washing the perineum. Bladder control may be practically non- existent in these first forty- eight hours or so, and decidedly dodgy for some time after. The cradle of muscles that supports your bladder and womb has been stretched by pregnancy and childbirth and it needs tightening up. Answer: do pelvic floor exercises (otherwise known as kegels). Exercise: The pelvic floor muscles are the ones that you use when you want to urinate or defecate, and are the muscles you used to push your baby out if you had a vaginal birth. Strengthen the muscles by contracting the area around your vagina and anus. Hold it for 3. 0 seconds. Do 8 contractions each time. Don’t worry if you cannot feel yourself doing them; the area will be numb at this early stage. Caesarean section: Most women will require strong and effective analgesia for the first 4. Caesarean section: Within six to eight hours after delivery, your carers will be there to help you to sit up, get you sitting on the side of the bed, and start you walking short distances. Becoming mobile as quickly as possible is the best advice for post- cesarean mothers. The surgery and the anesthesia can cause fluids to accumulate, which may lead to pneumonia, so movement is very important. Caesarean section: The lochia is frequently less heavy after a c- section, because the surgeon usually cleans out the uterine cavity with swabs before stitching up the walls of the uterus, thereby removing blood clots, pieces of membrane, placenta and other debris. Nonetheless, you will have lochia for several weeks and may pass small blood clots and experience some after pains when breastfeeding. Caesarean section: The catheter that was inserted before your caesarean will usually be removed once you can walk to the bathroom. The IV line you had inserted before the operation will be kept in place until your ifntestines begin to work again. You will know this is happening when you start to experience rumbling in your stomach and gas pains. Ease the gas pains by avoiding carbonated drinks, or drinks that are very hot or cold. Exercise: For mothers who have had a caesarean, medical professionals recommend gentle coughing to stimulate the area around the stitches. This stimulation will promote healing around the wound. Do this several times a day. Day 2: Now the first 2. C that lasts for over a day. This could signal an infection. You may find yourself urinating a lot now (an astounding 3 quarts a day!) as the excess fluids of pregnancy is excreted. Getting urine (which is naturally acidic) on raw skin will be traumatic and painful, and this is likely to continue until 2 weeks have passed. If your bowels have taken a bashing, or your pelvic floor is letting you down, you might find that excess wind is a problem. Leaking poop (postpartum faecal incontinence) can also be an issue for the same reasons. If you're suffering in this department, rest assured this should right itself as you regain strength down bellow. Your uterus has shrank about a finger’s width since yesterday. It will continue to do this every day. Exercise: Breathing deeply will help you get rid of any lingering anesthetic and will also help you get in touch with how your stomach feels (particularly useful if you’ve had a caesarean). Start with gentle breathing and gradually build up to deeper and deeper breaths. Deep breathing encourages your lungs to inflate fully after having been compressed by the baby and your diaphragm. Exercise: Your blood clotting mechanism changed toward the end of pregnancy in an attempt to prevent excess haemorrhage during labour, which means that you are more at risk of blood clots (thrombosis) during these early days after delivery. Getting up and about and ensuring that you do ankle- circling exercises will help to prevent this but if you experience any discomfort in your calf, inform a medical professional as soon as possible (Tiran 2. Caesarean section: The sterile dressing that covers your incision will usually be changed today. Day 3: Constipation should be easing. Your blood pressure, temperature, heart rate and breathing have all returned to normal. Up until now, your baby has been extracting small amounts of colostrum, and your breasts have been easily handling the workload. Then it happens, your milk comes in. Your breasts become swollen, hard and tender. You may also develop a brief low- grade fever (less than 3. C) but this should last no longer than 2. Nipple soreness for a few days is normal as your breasts adjust to their new role (see 'Timeline of a Breastfed Baby'). Establishing an effective latch as soon as possible is important. You can now feel the top of your uterus at or a few finger widths below the level of your belly button. Caesarean section: Staples or clips are usually removed today. You may be able to return home. Caesarean section: You will experience some pain around the incision as the anaesthesia wears off. The level of pain will depend upon your personal pain threshold and how many caesarean deliveries you’ve had (the first is usually the most uncomfortable). Exercise: Mothers who have had a caesarean will particularly benefit from simple stomach pull- ins. Lie down and contract your pelvic floor muscles then try to pull in your abdominals. In these early days you may find these pull- ins hard, as any feeling in this area will be limited. Although the lower layers of the incision will be healing fast, there will be numbness around the area of the scar itself. Day 4: A midwife will intermittently visit you at home between now and day 1. UK). Around now, oestrogen levels plummet and are replace by floods of the mothering hormone, prolactin. These hormonal changes can lead to emotional mood swings commonly known as the . I don't get to go on my office's weight loss reward cruise . I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or if this is actually a problem and is unfair. The company I work for allows managers to implement wellness programs and initiatives for their branches or departments. The company is big (hundreds of employees) but my branch only has nine of us, plus a manager and an assistant manager. My manager implemented a voluntary wellness initiative, which included access to a nutritionist and coupons for sessions with a trainer or a gym membership. He, the assistant manager, and all of my coworkers signed up. He announced that anyone who lost 2. Friday everyone would get a paid day off of work. Losing 2. 5 pounds would put me at 8. I know weight alone is not the only indicator of health, but I’m former military and currently in the reserves. I go for a physical every year and both the military and my doctor are happy with my weight, my exercise routine, and how in shape I am. My manager refused to make an exception for me because he said the program had to apply to everyone and their HR department back him up, saying the program wouldn’t be fair if it didn’t apply to everyone equally. I ended up having to come into an empty office with no work to do on the day my managers and coworkers took the boat cruise. My manager even checked when I swiped in and out to make sure I came in on time and didn’t leave early. He says there will be more prizes like this in the future and everyone but me is excited about it. Do you think I am wrong to be upset and to feel left out? I don’t begrudge my coworkers making changes but I also don’t think it’s fair I should miss out because I don’t need to lose weight. Should I just leave this alone and be more supportive?(I do want to indicate that when I’m discussing health and fitness, I’m talking about myself only. I don’t think I’m better than anyone or anything like that and I hope I didn’t come across that way.)Agggghh, your manager is being an ass. I mean, really, what would he do if you decided to participate anyway because you really wanted that day cruise, and starved yourself down to 8. Would he feel good about that outcome? You are not eligible for these prizes. In addition to what you. But your manager is being particularly crappy in this case, with having you be the one person on your team who didn. The gracious move would have been for him to say, . If you want to make this your issue and point out to your boss how unhealthy these competitions can be and why they don.

According to the latter, 7. Dietary vegans might use animal products in clothing (as leather, wool, and silk), toiletries and similar. Vegans reject the commodification of animals. Some of these are chemical compounds that can be derived from animal products, plants, or petrochemicals. Allantoin, lactic acid, retinol and squalene, for example, can be vegan. These products and their origins are not always included in the list of ingredients. They avoid certain vaccines; the flu vaccine, for example, is usually grown in hens' eggs, although an effective alternative, Flublok, is widely available in the United States. Non- vegan items acquired before they became vegan might be donated to charity or used until worn out. Some vegan clothes, in particular leather alternatives, are made of petroleum- based products, which has triggered criticism because of the environmental damage involved in their production. Ethical vegans avoid them on the premise that their production causes animal suffering and premature death. In egg production, most male chicks are culled because they do not lay eggs. Female calves are separated from their mothers within 2. Male calves are slaughtered at birth, sent for veal production, or reared for beef. Tofu comes in a variety of textures, depending on water content, from firm, medium firm, and extra firm for stews and stir- fries; to soft or silken for salad dressings, desserts, and shakes. Soy is also eaten in the form of tempeh and texturized vegetable protein (TVP); also known as textured soy protein (TSP), the latter is often used in pasta sauces. Almond milk is lower in dietary energy, carbohydrates and protein. Babies who are not breastfed may be fed commercial infant formula, normally based on cows' milk or soy. The latter is known as soy- based infant formula or SBIF. The recommendation is three or more servings a day of fruit (one of them high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruit, melon or strawberries); two or more of protein- rich legumes (such as soybeans, which can be consumed as soy milk, tofu or tempeh); five or more of whole grains (corn, barley, rice and wheat in products such as bread or cereal); and four or more of vegetables. My. Plate is divided into five groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products (or calcium- fortified soymilk), and protein. The protein includes meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts and seeds. A raw vegan diet includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain and legume sprouts, seeds and sea vegetables. There are many variations of the diet, including fruitarianism. Vegans obtain all their protein from plants, omnivores usually a third, and ovo- lacto vegetarians half. Combinations that contain high amounts of all the essential amino acids include rice and beans, corn and beans, and hummus and whole- wheat pita. A deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia and nerve damage. Vegetarians should thus take preventive measures to ensure adequate intake of this vitamin, including regular consumption of supplements containing B1. Plants not washed properly may contain B1. Animals obtain it by eating contaminated plants, other animals, or their own faeces, and become sources of B1. The mouth is another source, but in small amounts and possibly analogue (not biologically active). Tempeh, a fermented soybean food, is cited as another source, perhaps because of contamination during production. Ninety- nine percent of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. Plant sources include broccoli, turnip, bok choy and kale; the bioavailability of calcium in spinach is poor. The study found that vegans consuming at least 5. Without it bones can become thin and brittle; together with calcium it offers protection against osteoporosis. Vitamin D is produced in the body when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin; outdoor exposure is needed because UVB radiation does not penetrate glass. It is present in salmon, tuna, mackerel and cod liver oil, with small amounts in cheese, egg yolks and beef liver, and in some mushrooms. People with little sun exposure may need supplements. The extent to which sun exposure is sufficient depends on the season, time of day, cloud and smog cover, skin melanin content, and whether sunscreen is worn. According to the National Institutes of Health, most people can obtain and store sufficient vitamin D from sunlight in the spring, summer and fall, even in the far north. They report that some researchers recommend 5. Tanning beds emitting 2. Cholecalciferol (D3) is synthesized in the skin after exposure to the sun, or consumed in the form of animal products; when produced industrially it is taken from lanolin in sheep's wool. Ergocalciferol (D2) is derived from ergosterol from UV- exposed mushrooms or yeast and is suitable for vegans. Conflicting studies have suggested that the two forms may or may not be bioequivalent. This is particularly true of anyone with hemochromatosis, a relatively common condition that can remain undiagnosed. Coffee and some herbal teas can inhibit iron absorption, as can spices that contain tannins (turmeric, coriander, chillies, and tamarind). The study concluded that there was no effect of vegan diets overall on all- cause mortality, cancer mortality, cerebrovascular disease or cardiovascular- disease- related mortality. The effects also disappeared when specific cancers were analysed. Vegans tend to be thinner, with lower serum cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Vegans might be at risk of low bone mineral density without supplements. They indicate that vegetarian diets may be more common among adolescents with eating disorders, but that its adoption may serve to camouflage a disorder rather than cause one. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council similarly recognizes a well- planned vegan diet as viable for any age. Attention should be given to nutrient intake, particularly protein, vitamins B1. D, essential fatty acids, iron, zinc and calcium. Animal ingredients are ubiquitous because they are cheap. After animals are slaughtered for meat, the leftovers are put through the rendering process, and some of that material, particularly the fat, ends up in toiletries. Common ingredients include tallow in soap, and collagen- derived glycerine, used as a lubricant and humectant in many haircare products, moisturizers, shaving foams, soaps and toothpastes. Stearic acid is a common ingredient in face creams, shaving foam and shampoos; as with glycerine, it can be plant- based but is usually animal- derived. Lactic acid, an alpha- hydroxy acid derived from animal milk, is used in moisturizers, as is allantoin, from the comfrey plant or cows' urine, in shampoos, moisturizers and toothpaste. The British Vegan Society's sunflower logo and PETA's bunny logo mean the product is certified vegan, which includes no animal testing. The leaping- bunny logo signals no animal testing, but it might not be vegan. Its website contains a list of certified products. Most leather clothing is made from cows' and calves' skins, but the skin of sheep, goats, horses and pigs is also used. Less common skins include those from kangaroos, elephants, zebras, seals, crocodile and deer. Vegans regard the purchase of leather, particularly from cows, as financial support for the meat industry. Divisions within animal rights theory include the utilitarian, protectionist approach, which pursues improved conditions for animals, and rights- based abolitionism, which seeks to end human ownership of non- humans. Abolitionists argue that protectionism serves only to make the public feel that animal use can be morally unproblematic (the . The right of subjects- of- a- life not to be harmed can be overridden by other moral principles, but Regan argues that pleasure, convenience and the economic interests of farmers are not weighty enough. 4/16/2017 0 Comments 16 3 Day DietsThis obviously is uncomfortable, but it offers the opportunity to lose 5 to 2. Activities commonly associated with detoxification include dieting, fasting, consuming exclusively or avoiding specific foods (such as fats, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, juices, herbs, or water), colon cleansing, chelation therapy, and the removal of dental fillings. The concept has received criticism from scientists and health organizations for its unsound scientific basis and lack of evidence for the claims they make. The British organisation Sense About Science has described some detox diets and commercial products as . Nonetheless, mainstream medicine continues to produce evidence that the field is unscientific and anachronistic. The general idea suggests that most food contains contaminants: ingredients deemed unnecessary for human life, such as flavor enhancers, food colorings, pesticides, and preservatives. Scientists, dietitians, and doctors, while generally viewing . Proponents claim that this causes the body to burn accumulated stored fats, releasing fat- stored . Proponents claim that things such as an altered body- odor support the notion that detox diets have an effect. The mainstream medical view is that the body has mechanisms to rid itself of toxins, and a healthy diet is best for the body. However, the colon usually does not require any help cleaning itself. In some cases, it results in tooth loss because when fillings are drilled out, some of the surrounding tooth structure will be removed with it. One version involves a foot- bath using a mild electric current, while another involves small adhesive pads applied to the skin (usually the foot). In both cases, the production of an alleged brown . In the case of the foot bath, the . In both cases, the same color- changes occur irrespective of whether the water or patch even make contact with the skin (they merely require water. Considering the financial costs to consumers, unsubstantiated claims and potential health risks of detox products, they should be discouraged by health professionals and subject to independent regulatory review and monitoring. According to the Mayo Clinic, the . The body is a well- developed system that has its own builtin mechanisms to detoxify and remove waste and toxins. They have to be, as the natural environment that we evolved in is hostile. It is remarkable that people are prepared to risk seriously disrupting these systems with unproven . Why is it that so many people are more comfortable self- medicating for conditions that exist only in advertisements, than they are simply taking their doctor's advice? It's because doctors are burdened with the need to actually practice medicine. They won't hide bad news from you or make up easy answers to please you. A low- protein diet is prescribed for those with inherited metabolic disorders, such as Phenylketonuria and Homocystinuria and reduced protein levels have been used by people with kidney or liver disease. Low protein consumption appears to alter the risk of bone breakage, presumably through changes in calcium homeostasis. The amount used by those with liver disease would still result in individuals being in nitrogen balance. Amino acids that are excess to requirement cannot be stored, but must be modified by deamination (removal of the amine group). As this occurs in the liver and kidneys, some individuals with damaged livers or kidneys may be advised to eat less protein. Due to the sulphur content of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, excess of these amino acids leads to the production of acid through sulphate ions. These sulphate ions may be neutralized by calcium ions from bone, which may lead to net urinary loss of calcium. This might lead to reduction in bone mineral density over time. Individuals suffering from phenylketonuria lack the enzyme to convert phenylalanine to tyrosine so low levels of this amino acid need to be provided in the diet. Homocystinuria is an inherited disorder involving the metabolism of the amino acid methionine leading to the accumulation of homocysteine. Treatment includes providing low levels of methionine and high levels of vitamin B6 in the diet. Low- protein diets are in vogue among some members of the general public because of the impact of protein intake on Insulin/Insulin- like growth factor 1 Signalling (IIS) and the direct sensing of amino acid availability by mammalian target of rapamycin (m. TOR), two systems that are implicated in longevity and cancer proliferation. Russell Henry Chittenden showed that less than half that amount was needed to maintain good health. The median human adult requirement for good quality protein is approximately 0. A 7. 0 kg adult human who was in the middle of the range would require approximately 4. This would represent less than 1. William Cumming Rose and his team studied the essential amino acids, helping to define minimum amounts needed for normal health. For adults, the recommended minimum amounts of each essential amino acid varies from 4 to 3. To be of good quality, protein only needs to come from a wide variety of foods; there is neither a need to mix animal and plant food together nor a need to complement specific plant foods, such as rice and beans. Plant protein is often described as incomplete, suggesting that they lack one or more of the essential amino acids. Apart from rare examples, such as Taro. However, the relative abundance of the essential amino acids is more variable in plants than that found in animals, which tend to be very similar in essential amino acid abundance, and this has led to the misconception that plant proteins are deficient in some way. Low- protein vs calorie restriction. Increases in longevity or reductions in age- associated morbidity have also been shown for model systems where protein or specific amino acids have been reduced. In particular, experiments in model systems in rats, mice, and Drosophila fruit flies have shown increases in life- span with reduced protein intake comparable to that for calorie restriction. Restriction of the amino acid methionine, which is required to initiate protein synthesis, is sufficient to extend lifespan. None of the diets in these regions is completely based on plants, but plants form the bulk of the food eaten. However, more recent research suggests that a high protein diet is required of 1. In addition, vitamin supplements especially vitamin B group should be taken. Salt should be restricted to below 5 mg per day. This diet was a daily ration of 2,0. Calories consisting of moderate amounts of boiled rice, sucrose and dextrose, and a restricted range of fruit, supplemented with vitamins. Sodium and chloride where restricted to 1. It showed remarkable effects on control of edema and hypertension. The Rice Diet program closed in 2. Mc. Dougall's program continue to be offered for kidney disease and hypertension. Calcium loss from bone occurs at protein intake below requirement when individuals are in negative protein balance, suggesting that too little protein is dangerous for bone health. Large prospective cohort studies have shown a slight increase in risk of bone fracture when the quintile of highest protein consumption is compared to the quintile of lowest protein consumption. As protein consumption increases, calcium uptake from the gut is enhanced. However, calcium uptake from the gut does not compensate for calcium loss in the urine at protein consumption of 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Calcium is not the only ion that neutralizes the sulphate from protein metabolism, and overall buffering and renal acid load also includes anions such as bicarbonate, organic ions, phosphorus and chloride as well as cations such as ammonium, titrateable acid, magnesium, potassium and sodium. However, not all plant material is base forming, for example, nuts, grains and grain products add to the acid load. This table shows the grams of protein per 1. This is often found in arguments for selective consumption of plant foods to combat osteoporosis, and in arguments to choose plant foods in diets restricting methionine. However, this is not strictly true, as the following table shows. Animal protein shows a range of approximately 3% to 4% methionine plus cysteine for meat as well as for milk and dairy. Eggs have higher values in a 4% to 7% range. While many fruit and vegetables have values below 3%, values for grains, seeds, and nuts fall in the 3% to 4% range, and many exceed 4%. Dry or mature legumes have values in the range 2% to 3%, but sprouted legumes exceed 4%. The highest value is for Brazil nuts. This table shows that unless large classes of plant food are avoided, a plant- based diet is unlikely to be significantly lower in methionine and cysteine than an omnivorous diet if the same level of protein is consumed. One of the top reasons diets fail is because people eat too few calories. When you do this, you force your body to slow down its metabolism. This causes all kinds of hormonal changes that work against you and your fat loss goals. Hormones such as testosterone, thyroid, and growth hormone are all negatively affected. Make sure that when you diet you are keeping your metabolism high, and you will be well on your way towards success, instead of deciding what diet you’re going to try next. It also has built- in reward days or reward meals (depending on the plan you’re following), so you can still eat your favorite foods on a regular basis. Sounds pretty much perfect, right? You can eat healthy foods, enjoy foods you love, and still lose weight. While each plan has a different mix of high- carb and low- carb days, each day works basically the same: Eat five meals—no more, no less. Eat breakfast within 3. Eat your remaining 4 meals—either high- carb or low- carb, depending on the plan you’re following—every 3 hours. Choose approved foods. Drink a gallon of water. How does it work? In order to lose weight, our bodies need the right combination of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats. Here’s why: Protein builds and maintains muscles and these muscles burn calories like an inferno. Protein also breaks down more slowly than carbs and fat, which burns even more calories and helps you feel fuller longer. Carbs are the preferred fuel source for your muscles and organs, and they come in healthy versions (vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes), and not- so- healthy versions (cakes, cookies, soda, doughnuts, candy, and many processed foods). Healthy fats also help keep your energy levels steady and keep you from feeling hungry. So why do we alternate high- carb and low- carb days in carb cycling? On high- carb days you’re stocking your calorie- burning furnace so that on low- carb days your furnace burns fat, and lots of it! This pattern tricks your metabolism into burning a lot of calories, even on those low- carb days. It’s an amazing and well- proven process. What are the benefits? Carb cycling has many benefits: It fits any lifestyle. You’ll learn how to shed weight and body fat, and how to make smart lifestyle choices for the rest of your life. This puts YOU in control. In this post, I'll share with you how I lost 1. Fitbit. It's easy, it's fun, and the weight loss is pretty much effortless. One day in April, I woke up one morning and said to myself, I am ready to lose this extra 3. You know, you can SAY you want to do something, and waffle around. Finally, I was ready.“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Murray So right there and then I committed to lose the weight. It wasn't so much about losing the weight as it was about getting active and getting in shape. I wanted to be able to climb flights of stairs easily, lift heavy things and just get a lot more physical activity. You see, I have the most sedentary job on the planet. I work on a computer 1. I work from home. I don't even have to walk from the parking lot to my office. Thank goodness for the Fitbit — weight loss made easy! Fitbit Weight Loss: The Gamification of Exercise. Seems like most people have turned exercise into work these days. And it should be play! When we were kids, riding bikes and swimming and going on walks were all things we did for fun. I have figured this out about myself: I am the type of person who doesn't like to do anything unless it is fun. I'm the queen of procrastination! I guess I've figured out how to make work fun! In my mind, it doesn't feel like work.)If I can make a game out of it, I'll do it happily. It motivates me to get more steps and be more active. This is why I love the Fitbit so much. Fitbit weight loss is fun! The Fitbit turns getting in shape into an enjoyable game. Fitbit Weight Loss: How I Lost 1. Pounds in a Month with My Fitbit. Here's how I lost the weight. First of all, I got a Fitbit. Next, I set my goal to walk 1. This is very hard for me to accomplish, since I am extremely sedentary. As I said, I typically work 8. Since I got the Fitbit, I know what my goal is so I get out and walk first thing in the morning. Because I'm watching those steps, I end up walking a lot longer — typically about an hour — so I can get my steps in. I don't make my goal every day. I'm not strict about it. I just do the best I can. I also do other exercises. My goal is to do 1. I don't always make it but I do it as often as I can. I tried to do 2. 0 or 3. I didn't like it. I get antsy after 1. I can do 1. 0 minutes of anything, though. And 1. 0 minutes of kettlebell per day equals 7. I also started eating less. On the dashboard on the Fitbit website, you can select a level of calorie deficit that you want — from easy to hard. Then all you have to do is enter what you eat each day. All I'm doing is trying to create a calorie deficit. My problem was I was eating a lot more and I had become a whole lot more sedentary since I started working from home. Looking back on it, when I had a corporate job, I was probably getting 3 or 4 times more exercise just from going to the office, going to meetings, etc. And I wasn't cooking for a family (I was single) so I just didn't eat as much. I also got the Fitbit Aria Wi- Fi Smart Scale so I can automatically track my weight. All you have to do is stand on the scale in the morning and it will track your weight and body fat — it syncs automatically with your Fitbit dashboard on the website. It just makes it easier.)I know, weight's not everything — measurements are more important. But you can track those too in your Fitbit dashboard. I want to say that I don't try to be perfect with this. I do find that I'm eating a lot less — and I'm not hungry. Fitbit Weight Loss: What I Eat. I eat WHATEVER I want. I do not count calories or carbs. That NEVER works for me because I feel restricted and then I want to binge. And it's not sustainable anyway. I don't want to spend my life counting calories or avoiding foods I love. I eat what I love now, I just eat less of it. All I do is enter what I eat into the Fitbit dashboard but that is it. Then I just stay under the limit. At the end of the day, I know whether I can have a little ice cream or another glass of wine. And this really motivates me to be more active. Again, it's not about the weight loss, it's about getting more active and getting in shape. For me, it helps to motivate me if I have a goal (1. K steps a day) and I have a way to track it. You don't have to cut out the desserts. If you are too strict with yourself, you'll end up quitting. A chocolate chip cookie here and there is going to keep you in the game. This is not about being perfect — it's about keeping your eyes on the prize long term. Speaking of rewards, when I reach my goal and am back in my pre- baby jeans, I'm going to go on a shopping spree and buy all new clothes. Fitbit Weight Loss: My Results. Since I started using my Fitbit on April 9th (just 6 weeks ago), I have lost an inch on my bust, an inch on my waist, 3/4 of an inch on my hips, 1/2 inch on my arm, and 3/4 of an inch on my thigh. Some of these things haven't had that much evidence to back them up, but they are safe and have been very cheap to acquire so I have tried them anyway. Some or most of it boils down to recalcitrant hypoglycemia, that no supplement, hormone or dietary modification seems to eradicate. So often it's not clear which illness I'm trying to treat, CFS/ME or hypopituitarism. They never start working again even if I wait years before next trying them. Rotating supplements doesn't help, as even things I've taken very irregularly have stopped working. Type or paste a DOI name into the text box. Your browser will take you to a Web page (URL) associated with that DOI name. Send questions or comments to doi. The placebo effect doesn't seem like a likely explanation, since the likelihood of something helping me has never had any correlation to my expectations about it. Since late 2. 01. I had the first bout of gastroenteritis (from food poisoning) since my getting CFS/ME in 2. I start taking it. It cannot be used to treat or diagnose any medical condition and it is not intended to substitute or replace professional medical care or advice. I assume no responsibility for any of the information presented here. Always discuss treatment options with your doctor and tell your doctor about every medication, supplement and herbal product you're taking. Also, some of the products I have taken are Finnish/Dutch, so you may not be able to find the exact same product. I have had good experience and generally trust Solgar (expensive), NOW (usually very cheap and very good), Doctor's Best (most products fairly inexpensive) and Life Extension Foundation (often expensive, some products very affordable). Also nothing to complain about Source Naturals or Healthy Origins which tend to be quite inexpensive. They admit I have paid for something I have not received and that their ordering system is unusable, but they refuse to compensate (the order system . When filing a BBB complaint I found out I was far from the only one! With any decent company the customer is always right. With i. Herb the customer is always wrong, even if they are right. Remember that people are different and the effects of herbs, supplements and medications vary from person to person. There is no excuse not to look it up. Be particularly careful if you suffer from other serious illnesses (e. Most products are not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For example many amino acids should be taken on an empty stomach, but some supplements can irritate the stomach if taken alone. Also check if you should take it in the morning, at night, or several times a day. However, doses vary on individual basis so the dose that works for me may be too large or too small for your needs. The Supposed to help field lists conditions and symptoms the supplement is believed to help with, but it does not mean it actually works for them. The field Science lists some the factual information and research, which is not conclusive and mostly pertains to symptoms that have to do with CFS/ME. If there's something you need to be careful about (such as side effects or contraindications), they're listed in Watch out for. Remember that there can always be idiosyncratic side effects, allergic reactions or drug compatibility issues that are not listed here. Finally, the field Recommendation lists my personal opinion about the treatment and whether it's worthwhile to try for CFS/ME. Even if it says I recommend the treatment it doesn't mean it will work for you, but it's something I believe one should try if it's not contraindicated for you (and conversely, even if I don't recommend it it doesn't mean it's bad or that it won't work for you). Beta alanine is much cheaper. Results: Made my hypoglycemia better for a month, then pooped out as everything does. It also made my skin look better like carnosine, suggesting that it did indeed convert to carnosine. Watch out for: Beta alanine tends to cause a harmless but rather unpleasant tingling sensation in the extremities. This can be avoided by taking it in small doses, I tolerate about 7. Recommendation: If you suffer from hypoglycemia or want to try a cheaper form of carnosine. Carnosine (2. 00. Usage: 4. 00 mg a day. Supposed to help: fatigue, muscle endurance, immune system, tolerance to stress, brainfog, heart problems, mood, migraine prevention. Science: Carnosine is a dipeptide composed of the amino acids beta- alanine and histidine. Some of its effects are due to the histidine, but most due to the complex. It is found naturally in the body especially in the muscles and in the brain. Carnosine is a strong antioxidant and can chelate heavy metals. It is touted as an e. It is used to treat e. Doses starting from 7. Results: I didn't notice any benefits at all, except that after taking it for a week or two the skin in my face started to look a lot more lively, as in healthy and rosy instead of pale and almost grayish (and this was in the winter so it couldn't have been the sun). Maybe I'd have got some results with 8. LDN does and almost as much as all my other supplements combined, so I don't think it would be worth it. I didn't get any migraines during the two months I was on it, but I don't get migraines very often anyway so it could have well been a coincidence. Watch out for: Carnosine may deplete the body of magnesium and zinc, which is why it should be taken with them. I wasn't taking magnesium and I did feel like I feel when I'm low on magnesium, so I resumed taking magnesium citrate. Both are good supplements for CFS/ME in general. Recommendation: Worth a try (though more expensive than most other supplements), but if you don't see any effects in a month or two it's probably no use in continuing for longer. Most of the benefits should be noticeable in a month. Some people may have to go up to 8. A Finnish complementary medicine doctor greatly recommends carnosine for CFS/ME - but then again he sells it. According to studies it can also help improve and maintain cognitive function. It has been used in the treatment of e. Parkinson's disease. Results: I was fairly sure it would help me, but didn't notice any effects. Watch out for: If you have kidney problems or risk factors predisposing you to them (such as diabetes or chronic NSAID use), you probably shouldn't take creatine without your doctor's approval. Fluid retention is possible. Large doses may cause diarrhea. Recommendation: Yes. It is inexpensive and well- tolerated. Creatine pyruvate may be more effective, but is also a lot more costly. It is an important antioxidant and works to detoxify many substances. There is thought to be insufficient glutathione in CFS/ME patients (some deficiencies are genetic and can be tested for). Glutathione is often considered to be absorbed poorly from oral use (though modern products supposedly absorb better) so it is often used as a cream. Taking N- acetylcysteine and undenatured whey can boost glutathione levels and are more commonly used. Vitamin D, lipoic acid, SAM- e, melatonin and milk thistle may also help. Results: It did seem to help with fatigue and functionality, but stopped working just like everything else. NAC never caused such improvement, only slight relief in muscle problems. Watch out for: Glutathione is reported to often cause . Recommendation: It is somewhat expensive, but if that's not a problem, yes. Glycine is usually sold as a powder, which has an agreeable, mildly sweet taste. Results: The first time I took perhaps 3. I was surprised by how powerful the effect was, considering that in some studies people have taken up to 2. The effect is no longer so powerful, but ~1 g still usually knocks me out when needed. Haven't noticed any other effects. Watch out for: Recommendation: Sure, it's safe, fairly inexpensive and can help several things. DL- phenylalanine (2. Usage: 5. 00- 7. 50 mg a day. Supposed to help: pain, fatigue, tiredness, cognitive problems, immune system, depression, weight loss, orthostatic hypotension. Science: DL- phenylalanine (DLPA) is a racemic mixture of the amino acid phenylalanine. It slows down the breakdown of endorphins (which is why it is recommended as an adjunct to LDN) and converts to dopamine and phenylethylamine (a mood elevating chemical also found in chocolate) to some extent. Results: The first time I tried it for a few weeks I didn't notice anything. The second time I got an irresistible urge to clean up (every day), probably caused by the increased brain levels of dopamine, which is very important for motivation. Watch out for: Some people believe that phenylalanine is somehow harmful, because aspartame- containing soft drinks have a warning about it. It is actually an essential amino acid, which is only problematic if you have phenylketouria (a rare genetic condition and you would know if you have it). It should also be avoided if you have a history of schizophrenia/psychosis or malignant melanoma or are taking levodopa or MAOI antidepressants. Don't take it without your doctor's approval if you have hypertension or are taking other antidepressants or stimulants. Taking it late in the day may cause insomnia. It can also cause nausea, anxiety, stomach upset and headache. Recommendation: Yes, if you're taking low dose naltrexone or have chronic pain. Otherwise probably no, unless you've tried just about everything else (or want to try LDN, but cannot get a prescription). It has an important function in the metabolic processes in the body. 4/11/2017 0 Comments 20 Year Potato Diet20 Year Potato Diet To Lose WeightVegan Recipe For Creamy Potato- Leek Soup. When the maker of the film Supersize Me ate nothing but food from a well- known fast- food chain three times a day for a month, the diet nearly killed him. Here is one of her delicious creamy soups made without dairy, but sure to satisfy. Leeks give lots of iron- rich mineral nourishment, while garlic and onions add their immune- boosting and heart- healthy benefits. Paired with a crisp salad, Creamy Potato- Leek Soup makes a perfect cozy fall supper. Creamy Potato Leek Soup. INGREDIENTS1 tablespoon extra- virgin olive oil. Yukon Gold potatoes (about 1 pound), peeled and cubed into 1/2- inch cubes. Heat a 4- quart soup pot over medium heat and add the oil. Add the leeks, onion, and sea salt and saute for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until the onion begins to turn translucent. Add the garlic and stir well. Cook for 1 minute more. Add the potatoes and vegetable stock, cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer. Remove the soup from the heat and use an immersion/stick blender to blend the soup in the pot or ladle the soup into a blender, 1 cup at a time.
